First surface mirrors(FSM), also called the front surface mirrors, have the reflective surface applied to the front surface of the glass substrate. These first surface coated mirrors are especially suited for universal applications and as part of a basic laboratory equipment. A multilayer coating of these mirrors spans a spectrum of approximately 300 nm for a 0-45 degree angle of incidence. All of our mirrors are supplied the first front surface-coated with aluminum (Al) and are over-coated with either silicon monoxide (SiO) or magnesium fluoride (MgF2).
The First Surface Mirrors can reduce the chance of distortion and “ghosting” from secondary refraction as light passes through the glass to the reflective surface and then back through the glass as in second or rear surface mirrors. First surface mirrors are essential for certain applications where light is being manipulated and distortion must be minimized. Typical uses include telescopes, periscopes, laser optics, military & commercial simulators, cameras and most recently 3D scanners. Sherlan Optics can offer the large size nearly to be 1000mm.
